Module 7

Motion to the Dominant

The two most common points of harmonic repose (i.e., cadential goals) in tonal music are I and V. For this reason melodies often come to pause on scale degrees and , which are the root and third of the I chord, and on , , and , which are the root, third, and fifth of the V chord. This module draws special attention to melodic arrivals on members of the V chord, some of which are temporary, occurring roughly at the midway point of a melody, and some of which are more final sounding, occurring at the end of a melody.

In addition, the study of chromatic tones continues by focusing on a specific chromatic pitch, , which is a tendency tone that leads strongly to . The motion of to mimics the resolution of to , a melodic feature that is so powerful that it can be chromatically applied to other scale degrees. The melodies in this module employ as a temporary leading-tone to . This means that you will on occasion hear the dominant scale degree as the new tonic, either temporarily or permanently. Example 7.1 includes a motion to the dominant and shows how one might temporarily think of the scale degrees involved in the melodic approach to in either the home key of A major, or in the key of the dominant: E major.
